1914 Giro d’Italia Start List
Before the race started, 99 cyclists had entered the race, of which 35 were professional cyclists in a Pro-team, 41 were professional cyclists without a team, and 23 were amateurs (aspiranti).
Favorites for the race were Lucien Petit-Breton from France, and Ganna, Galetti, Girardengo, Giuseppe Santhia and Azzini from Italy. To increase the start list race director Armando Cougnet decided to allow amateurs to compete due to the low number of cyclists and teams. Many of these amateur riders were unemployed and had to borrow bikes in order to participate. Umberto Ripamonti was the youngest to enter the race at age 19. (He was 1 of the 8 overall Giro finishers!).
On May 24, 1914 when the Giro began, 81 of them started the race; only eight of them made it to the finish in Milan on 7 June. Riders were allowed to ride on their own or as a member of a team. There were eight teams that competed in the race: Alcyon, Atala, Bianchi, Ganna, Gerbi, Globo, Maino, and Stucchi. The field featured three former Giro d'Italia champions in 1909 winner Luigi Ganna, three-time winner Carlo Galetti, Eberardo Pavesi who was a member of the 1912 Atala winning team and defending champion Carlo Oriani. Other notable Italian riders that started the race included Costante Girardengo, Angelo Gremo, Alfonso Calzolari, and Giovanni Gerbi.
